After decades of being relegated to television, the documentary feature
film has enjoyed an overdue and fully deserved renaissance in recent years, and it has been restored to the cinema screen where it belongs.
The past few years have witnessed an admirable upsurge in the range and breadth of documentary filmmaking around the world, with many non-fiction productions eclipsing fiction films in the annual polls and awards of international critics.
Most importantly, the documentary has found a larger cinemagoing audience than the form has enjoyed for very many years. In recent years documentary filmmakers have enjoyed both commercial and critical success with such diverse material as Bowling For Columbine, Spellbound, Etre et Avoir, Winged Migration and Standing in the Shadows of Motown – the latter two films both featured in this festival last year – along with the awards-laden Irish production,The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.
We are very happy to present a more extensive documentary programme this year, spread across the festival and offering an outstanding selection of movies on themes and issues approached with insight, skill and style. These are movies made with passion and commitment, and designed to provoke, inform and intrigue in different measures.
